Regenerative Social Enterprise
Partnering with communities in Madagascar to build a drought-resistant future.

Time is running out
Relentless drought, systemic poverty and the effects of climate change mean that 3 million people in the Deep South of Madagascar are losing both their way of life and the singular Spiny Forest habitat around them. The population has doubled in the past 15 years, and 91% of people live on less than $700 per year.
More than 1 million Malagasy in the Deep South experience food insecurity, including nearly 500,000 children.
Protect livestock; Promote climate-resilient income opportunities
Wealth in the Deep South is traditionally reflected in zebu and goats. “95% of people facing acute food insecurity in southern Madagascar live on agriculture, livestock, and fishing. Years of poor harvests driven by drought upon drought… have pushed people to the brink. We must take urgent action to keep livestock alive… but cannot neglect the need to build more climate-resilient agricultural livelihoods for the longer term.” — Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Nature-Based Solutions
As an extension of Regeneration International’s Billion Agave Project, we work with farmers to plant a drought-tolerant agroforestry system with agave, traditional crops, and native trees to improve farmer yields, provide livestock forage, and capture atmospheric carbon.
The water-efficient, nutrient-rich silage (livestock feed) comes from agave biomass, providing a readily available, inexpensive option for farmers to keep animals alive during the dry season.
We are committed to locally-driven success. In addition to working with farm cooperatives, we partner with community-managed forest associations to regenerate and protect degraded Spiny Forest habitat, home to IUCN Red List species at risk of extinction.
Reduce Poverty; Preserve the Spiny Forest
With few sources of reliable income, families resort to harvesting coal(?) in the Spiny Forest to sell for meager amounts in nearby cities. The immediate benefit is small while the lasting impact is huge — both on the perpetuation of poverty due to further degradation of the land and on the reduction of habitat for unique and endangered species.
To find long-term solutions, we are product testing agave- and prickly pear-based alcoholic spirits, with the goal of creating a luxury export brand to provide desperately-needed jobs and farm income and to create opportunities for employee ownership and profit sharing. The proud people of the Deep South are working together, and with us, to reduce local poverty and protect their unique home and way of life.
