Climate Smart Agroforestry

Pervasive drought and sporadic rainfall driven by climate change are impacting farmer’s yields, desiccating arable land, and creating massive destructive sand storms. This drive farmers and herders to seek new fertile ground through slash & burn of the Spiny Forest.
We partner with farmers associations on technical trainings and establishing agroforestry systems adapted from the World Agroforestry Center and Regeneration International’s Billion Agave Project. These systems are drought-resistant and reinvigorate ecosystem services like wind-breaks, erosion control, and beneficial microclimates.
Thanks to a grant from Conservation International and Global Environment Fund, we have trained 100 farmers in climate-smart agroforestry and biochar composting, helping them preserve soil health and stopping slash & burn deforestation.
